Jazz After Dark

Commemorating pianist Abdullah Ibrahim, who died June 2026 at age of 91. A native of Cape Town, South Africa, his unique style of jazz was infused with the folk music of his childhood. Duke Ellington arranged his early recording sessions. Early albums were released as Dollar Brand.  Ibrahim recorded and performed for decades, with his last album released in 2024. Tonight we'll hear selections from the 1960s to 2014.

Featuring Duke Ellington tonight, with his legendary performance featuring an extended solo by Paul Gonsalvez at the Newport festival in 1956; then Lester Young with Teddy Wilson, Art Blakey and Max Roach, Charles Mingus, Booker Little, later studio works by Ellington and from the London Concerts, and Booker Ervin.
