In the town of Lexington, the first shot of the Revolutionary War is fired - and a teenage boy from rural Massachusetts is thrust into the centre of the vicious conflict. George Washington is chosen as commander-in-chief of the brand-new Continental Army. But how can Washington turn a ragtag group of rebels into a force capable of standing up to the might of the British Empire?

Boston is in chaos, culminating in a bloody clash between locals and redcoats. From the turmoil steps John Adams, a young lawyer who volunteers to do the least wanted job in the city: defending British soldiers accused of perpetrating a massacre. Later, Parliament comes down hard on the American colonies, introducing more taxes and suspending rights.
