Nerd of Mouth

As much as we don't want to, we do judge books by their covers and more importantly their titles. A good name can make or break a movie.. Holden takes us through the art of naming things, why some titles work and some don't and the boys get into some fun debates like defending "Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot" as a good name for a movie. Then Jake talks about the infinite amount of interchangeable mobile game titles like Kingdoms of Kingdoms and that one that everyone just calls PUBG cause whatever it actually is called is very stupid. And finally Mike brings up how movies get renamed in other countries. Did you know Hot Tub Time Machine is called "GO!! With Bath" in Japan? Well you do now.

We’re closing out spooky season strong by talking about one of the most beloved horror comic book runs with a a master of horror himself, Marcus Parks! Marcus tells the boys just why this weird vegetable when written by a cantankerous bearded magician holds such a special place in his Texan heart. If you love sex potatoes (and who doesn’t?) this is the episode for you!!

Almost a century before the MCU, Universal Studios and its monster properties had a shared universe. Hell, they even shared it with Abbott and Costello a few times. Then after the MCU Universal was like "hey, we want the exact same lucrative interconnected thing they have" and thus we had the Dark Universe born of brittle clay on shaky ground. And after a false start with a Dracula movie that felt like a historical epic on Starz they properly kicked off their franchise with Tom Cruise as Tom Cruise in the Mummy (Guest starring a mummy). The boys raise this failed experiment from the dead and perform a verbal autopsy to determine exactly why it all fell apart. And yes, there's some good old fashioned Brendan Fraser defense and a shout out to the insanity that was Van Helsing.

There are hundreds of Christmas songs that we're about to be bombarded with for the last two months of the year but for some reason there aren't many Halloween songs. So few songs that people will just play horrifying sound effect records to fill the void cause you can only listen to Monster Mash so many times. And boy do we in this episode!! You'll learn the full history of the song and the pure joy that is talking like Bobby "Boris" Pickett. Spooky season can be both scary and silly and this week we go all in on the silly side.

The big communal belly laughs we used to hear in theaters have now been traded for blood curdling screams as folks with comedy backgrounds like Curry Barker, Jordan Peele, and Zach Cregger bring the tension and release formula they perfected so well into a new genre with massive critical and financial results. Why is this happening and more importantly why is it such a natural transition and hey, is there any way at all that comedy movies themselves can make a comeback or are we just trading slapstick for movies where people get stabbed with sticks (and various other weapons).
