Dave Zackin on his latest "scam" - finding an art practice that's fulfilling and fits into his life

    2026-07-30 | 32 mins.
Dave Zackin is based in NYC and is currently selling hand-painted ceramics. He's not great with the pottery wheel though, so he takes the discarded pots and things leftover by people at his community pottery studios and dresses them up as only Dave can. I was smitten with his weird and wonderful work and am grateful he agreed to chat with me. We talked about cartoon drawing, mural painting and what his art practice means to him. You can find out more about his work on his website and on his Instagram page.

Jesse Lee Kercheval on memoir writing, drawing and how it's never too late to learn new things

    2026-07-23 | 42 mins.
I'm so glad I was introduced to Jesse Lee's work because I became an instant fan after reading one of her novels (My Life as a Silent Movie). She is a fiction writer, poet, memoirist, translator and visual artist (not to mention a retired professor) and has published over twenty books. We had a truly wonderful talk about the trajectory of her creative life and how it's never too late to learn new things. I wish I was closer to Madison, Wisconsin so that I could view the exhibition of her visual art that will be opening not long after this is published. Pretty impressive for someone who started learning to draw during the pandemic lockdowns! Do yourself a favor and look up her work. You can find her on Instagram and if you are local to PEI - The Bookmark in Charlottetown can order her books.

Mickey Acorn on his songwriting process, stand-up comedy and the meaning of life

    2026-07-16 | 40 mins.
Mickey Acorn is an actor, comedian, songwriter, musician, writer, teacher . . . the list goes on. Since we acted together at UPEI in the late 90's, I've been admiring his work from far away (he's been living in Japan for 18 years). I don't think I've laughed this much in any other episode. We talked about his method of "wri-cording" (writing music while recording it), what lessons you learn on stage and what it means to be an artist. You can find Mickey online on Tiktok, YouTube, and probably many other places.

Daniel Baylis on poetry, music and how discomfort can contribute to the creative process

    2026-07-09 | 27 mins.
I just love Daniel Baylis' poetry collections and so when he began releasing music over the last year, I was overjoyed. His music is like his poetry - insightful, raw, beautiful and very true. I'm delighted that he agreed to join me on the podcast. We talked about the benefits of traveling as artists (and as humans in general), how he loves the challenge of adding music to his poetry, and how taking risks can be an important part of art-making. If you want to buy his books, visit here. If you want to listen to his music, it's streaming all over. You can view the lyric videos he's made on YouTube. His general website is here.

Renee Laprise on the connection between creativity and Mother Earth

    2026-07-02 | 40 mins.
The art that Renee has been making over the past several years is compelling, engaging and tells a story. There's a reason for that! We talked about how she's inspired to paint these days, how she made the move to making art full-time (and how much healthier she is because of it), her oracle deck and readings, and so, so much more. You can find out more about Renee, and see/buy her work, on her website.
