  • Who Do You Represent On Earth? - 1 Samuel 16:1-13
The story of David and Goliath is one of the most beloved stories in all of Scripture. We sing songs about battling our giants. Michelangelo painted this battle scene on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Malcolm Gladwell wrote a book called, David and Goliath: Underdogs, Mis ts, and the Art of Battling Giants (2015).We teach our children this story, praying they will trust God in life, while at the same time hoping they will not take too many crazy risks. It has become, in Western culture, a metaphor for anyone overcoming insurmountable odds to defeat an enemy. What is the story actually about? Is it about God coming to help us slay our giants, or is it about something else, much more foundational and life-changing? How would you answer the question of our sermon title? Who do you represent on earth?Do we compare our giant to ourselves or to God?Are we zealous for God’s glory or our own personal victories? Is our perspective today shaped by God’s faithfulness in the past?To whom does our battle belong?Do we have Jesus as our Champion?

  • Hearts After God - 1 Samuel 16:1-13
Today we begin the ā€œLife of Davidā€ series. David’s story is the longest and most detailed biography of the Old Testament. He is the archetype for every other Israelite king. When he dies, he leaves Israel with the longing for another king like him. King Jesus will be that perfect king. Jesus will perfect David’s every virtue and correct his every wrong.David is the only one in all of Scripture to be called ā€œa man after God’s own heart.ā€ What does it mean to have a heart after God? This is our question today. We pick up David’s story when Israel’s first king, Saul, is still reigning. The prophet Samuel is grieving over Saul’s disqualification as king. Why has God rejected Saul? For that matter, why would God reject anyone?1 Samuel 16:1 The Lord said to Samuel, ā€œHow long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.ā€ God has found someone. What was he looking for?The Lord chooses (not us).The Lord sees (so much more than us).The Lord anoints (we listen, trust, and obey).

  • I Do, I Don't - 1st Corinthians 7:25-40
Marriage reflects Christ’s unity with the church. But marriage is not everyone’s outcome. Do singles get to live in the beauty of God’s love in Jesus, or do they just get a consolation life? Paul addresses singles and marrieds, helping us understand that regardless if we say I do or I don’t, our relational state does not dictate our discipleship mandate. Our devotion is to God first – and our relationships are transformed through our love for and from Him.Our relational state does not dictate our discipleship mandate.Live with the end in mindIt’s about calling, not constraintBe confident in your decisionReflection:What is the call God has placed on your life – to be single, or to be married? Are you allowing the Holy Spirit to direct you toward that calling? How can you support in community other singles and marrieds? What would it look like for you to bless them in their calling? What does devotion in your present state look like? How can you take a step of devotion to God this week, or allow an area of your life to be redeemed through devoting it to God?
