What Nature Teaches Kids About Resilience And Hope

    2026-09-30 | 12 mins.
If you're the kind of parents seeking tools that help you really dig into deep, intentional growth with your child, this is the episode for you.  Your kid doesn’t need another lecture (they’ll likely forget by dinner). They need images they can carry into the next hard moment, and nature is full of them.

Today we’re joined by Amber Vilhauer, who co-wrote What Nature Teaches Us with her nine-year-old son, Clay, after turning hiking trails into a living classroom.
What Nature Teaches Us: A Book About Being the Light by Clay Vilhauer & Amber Vilhauer (Releasing October 13 via Disruption Books)

Here's a Free gift JUST for our Sustainable Parenting audience: Family Bonding & Nature Resource Toolkit
Amber shares how simple prompts like “What is the sun trying to model for us?” unlock a child’s inner world and invite wisdom you can’t force with a speech. We dig into some of the book’s most memorable metaphors: the sun warming everyone without choosing favorites, the rainbow arriving after the rain has done its work, and the reminder that hard things and beautiful things are connected.

We also explore how nature based parenting supports nervous system regulation in a high-anxiety, high-tech world. Flora reflects on why metaphors stick, including the story of trees that grow without wind and then fall because they never develop deep roots. Amber offers practical ways to use the book at home, in the car after a tough practice, or anywhere a child is dealing with disappointment, social dynamics, or big feelings. And we zoom out to the bigger picture: wonder and awe as a pathway back to hope, for us and for our kids.

If you want more connection and less combat, press play.

Questions to Ask Yourself, to be Sure You're Raising the Man, Not the Child.

    2026-09-23 | 7 mins.
If you’ve ever wondered how to get kids to listen without yelling, threats, or constant power struggles, this episode offers a different way to think about discipline. We’re talking about “raising the adult, not just managing the child” — and why focusing too heavily on instant obedience can sometimes build dependence instead of confidence, resilience, and independence.
As parents, it’s easy to get stuck asking, “How do I make my child listen?” or “What consequence will stop this behavior?” But if our long-term goal is to raise resilient kids who can problem-solve, regulate their emotions, take responsibility, and eventually function independently, our parenting strategies have to look beyond what gets compliance right now.
We’ll dig into snowplow parenting and the very understandable impulse to step in, rescue, remind, fix, and solve problems for our kids. While over-helping can make life easier in the moment, age-appropriate struggle gives children opportunities to build competence, confidence, emotional regulation, and problem-solving skills.
You’ll also hear how punishment-focused discipline can contribute to power struggles, lying, and emotional blowups — and what to focus on instead.
Then we’ll shift into practical positive parenting strategies rooted in Positive Discipline and kind and firm parenting.
You’ll learn questions that can completely change the way you approach challenging behavior:
How can I build connection so my child is more open to cooperation?
What might be underneath this behavior?
What skill does my child still need help developing? And how can we work on building that skill?
How can I teach emotional regulation instead of simply demanding compliance?
Where can I step back so my child can build more independence?
How can I create a safe environment where they aren't afraid to tell the truth?
How can we create a routine together that encourages autonomy?
This is Sustainable Parenting: bridging the gap between overly gentle parenting and overly harsh discipline so you can be kind AND firm at the same time.
Because the goal isn’t simply to stop tantrums, get kids to listen, or win today’s power struggle. It’s to raise confident, capable, resilient kids who can eventually handle life without us doing it for them.
If this episode helps, subscribe to the Sustainable Parenting Podcast, share it with a parent friend, and leave a quick review so more families can discover practical strategies for parenting without yelling, stopping power struggles, and raising resilient, independent kids.

Three Parenting Habits That Quietly Damage Self-Esteem

    2026-09-16 | 9 mins.
Today we’re unpacking three common parenting patterns that can unintentionally chip away at child self-esteem and confidence, even in homes filled with warmth and good intentions.

First, we get specific about compliments and why outcome-based praise (“you’re so smart,” “you’re naturally talented,” “you’re beautiful”) can create a fixed mindset. When kids believe their abilities are set, challenges like school struggles, friendship drama, or new environments can feel like proof they’re “not good enough.” I share what to say instead to build a growth mindset, using praise that highlights character, effort, creativity, persistence, and learning from feedback so kids carry those strengths into every part of life.

Next, we talk about the “parent as hero” trap. When we rush in to fix, smooth, or rescue, we may prevent embarrassment today but also block the deeper win: competence. Confidence grows when kids get to do hard things, solve problems, and see themselves as capable. Finally, we look at screen time and technology and how “safe and entertained” can come with a cost, reducing the real-world independence and problem-solving that builds resilient, confident kids.

If you want practical parenting strategies that bridge overly gentle parenting and overly harsh discipline, this conversation gives you simple shifts you can start using today. Subscribe, share with a fellow parent, and leave a quick review so more families can find the support they need. What’s one place you’re ready to step back so your child can step up?

Three Practical Tools For Parenting A Strong-Willed Child

    2026-09-02 | 15 mins.
Your strong-willed child is not “too much,” but the daily arguments can absolutely wear you down. If you’ve ever wished for headphones to stay calm, duct tape to stop the backtalk, or a remote to fast-forward the meltdown, you’re going to feel seen here. I’m Flora McCormick, licensed therapist and parenting coach, and I’m sharing three practical tools that help us keep boundaries without wrecking the relationship.

We start with the “headphones of Zen,” which is really a mindset shift: the iceberg of behavior. When we look beneath the surface, we often find a kid who needs autonomy and control and who downshifts into dysregulation fast. That reframes “defiance” into a nervous system problem we can respond to with curiosity, empathy, and better emotional regulation, while still holding the line.

Then we get real about the “duct tape” tool: it goes on us. It takes two people to argue, and we are the ones with the fully developed prefrontal cortex. I’ll walk you through how talking 90% less can lead to a 90% better outcome, plus how to use “name it to tame it” so your child feels understood without you getting pulled into defending, explaining, or debating.

Finally, we use the “magic remote” approach for the most escalated moments: keep the boundary, stop the power struggle, and offer either a silent hug or space to calm down. If you want fewer blowups, fewer regrets, and more connection with your strong-willed kid, press play. Subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a review so more parents can find this support.

Three Back-To-School Parenting Tips for More Joy All-Around

    2026-08-19 | 11 mins.
Time to move from unorganized chaos, into... organized chaos!
Yep. Sometimes that is what the start of school feels like. I’m Flora McCormick, licensed therapist and parenting coach, and I’m sharing three sustainable parenting strategies to help you start the year with more joy and ease: plan for the worst, start family meetings, and get a life.

First, we talk about why realistic expectations are a form of kindness (honestly - to yourself AND your kids). “Plan for the worst” doesn’t mean assuming your kids will fail. It means looking ahead at what typically goes sideways, like waking up earlier, missing shoes, forgotten gear, and rushed mornings, and building a simple back-to-school routine that prevents avoidable blowups. When you feel prepared, you’re more in control of your response and less likely to swing between overly gentle parenting and overly harsh discipline.

Next, we dig into family meetings as a practical Positive Discipline tool. I walk you through a three-part structure: an appreciation circle to build connection and gratitude, one collaborative problem-solving topic so you’re not doing top-down rules or inconsistent consequences, and a small repeatable “fun finish” so kids actually buy in.

Finally, we get honest about parent self-care. When you’re depleted, patience disappears. “Get a life” means finding one doable way to reconnect with what makes you feel like you, which helps the whole family system.
