Denise Chisholm's sector and factor perspectives – March 6, 2025
It’s like the classic tale of “he said, she said”, but this time, it’s a battle between two different inflation indicators. The University of Michigan’s survey on long-term inflation expectations rose to the highest level in almost three decades. While their expectations have surged, market-based measures – such as TIPS breakevens - have been far more stable, showing a more modest rise over the last six months. So historically, which measure has been a better guide? Joining the show today to unpack all this and more, including the sectors she favours in today’s market uncertainty is Fidelity Director of Quantitative Market Strategy, Denise Chisholm.

In conversation with former Canadian Ambassador to U.S. – David MacNaughton
President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China have world leaders and markets reacting sharply. Speaking from Parliament Hill last week, Prime Minister Trudeau says Canada will immediately begin implementing 25 per cent tariffs against 155 billion dollars’ worth of American Goods. Trudeau bluntly called Trump’s blanket tariffs “dumb”, and said Canadians “will not back down from a fight.” How will these tariffs impact Canadian industries and sectors? And how should Canadian officials approach negotiations and trade talks moving forward? To help us explore Canada’s next steps, former Canadian ambassador to the U.S. during the Obama and Trump administrations, David MacNaughton, joins the show today.

Tariff talk: Protecting capital and seizing opportunities – Andrew Marchese, Dave Way, David Tulk, Joe Overdevest and Patrice Quirion
So what is a tariff? Tariffs are taxes imposed by a country on imports from another, a varying percentage of the value of that import. In the U.S. the tariffs are paid by the importer to the U.S. Treasury, collected by the Customs and Border Protection agents. As far back as November, then president-elect Trump hinted at the possibility of imposing tariffs and now in early March the tariffs have been implemented. Today we have comments from five Fidelity experts to unpack how they are staying informed and level-headed, while aiming to protect investors hard-earned savings. This was initially presented as an episode of The Upside, our investor webcast.
