Additional production by Christine Hall @shirtsizesmall - Si Short from the Jack Knives is my guest this week. He grew up in England, moved to the States at 22, and now lives in Southern California. He took 10 years off from bands, started writing again in Hawaii, and the Jack Knives grew out of Thursday night jams into a fully independent band playing House of Blues and the Fillmore.
We get into building a following brick by brick instead of buying followers, what streaming data tells you about where to play, why live streams reach a totally different audience, and how the band balances tours with day jobs and families. Si also explains why he pushes the band to promote a record for a year instead of three months, and tells the story of getting his bass player turned away at the Canadian border before a Vancouver show.
The new Jack Knives album, Negative Spaces, is out November 6 on Fumie Records, produced by Pete Steinkopf of the Bouncing Souls. This fall they play shows with Dave Hause and The Mermaid, headline dates in Germany, Austria and England, and a run with the Bouncing Souls, the Flatliners and Suicide Machines. Additional production by Christine Hall @shirtsizesmall - My guest this week is Mike Frazier, a singer-songwriter from the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. He lives in Seattle now. The first time he was here was his first podcast ever, 10 years ago. We talk about the two years of symptoms nobody could figure out, the brain surgery, and April Days, the album he wrote after it. He plays April Days live in the studio. Make sure you guys follow Mike Frazier VA, and check out April Days.
MxPx is on all the Warped Tours coming up. Montreal is August 21, then Mexico City and Orlando. We're in Milan September 5 for Punkadeka Festival, our only European show. mxpx.com, anything we have going on is right there.

Additional production by Christine Hall @shirtsizesmall - Bill Stevenson is on the show. He's the drummer for legendary punk bands Descendents and ALL, he also played in Black Flag, and he produced our first live album, MxPx - At the Show. We get into songwriting, how he stays fast behind the kit at 62, the early Black Flag days, and taking his son Miles out on tour with Jon Snodgrass and Miles' band All My Senses.
Bill, Miles, and Snodgrass are out this August, running from Indianapolis and Chicago up to Tillsonburg, Ontario for a full ALL set at Buddies Fest, then Detroit. Descendents tour this fall with Social Distortion and the Chats.

Additional production by Christine Hall @shirtsizesmall - Blag Dahlia returns for his third time on the podcast. The Dwarves have a new album out called Jenkem, and Blag explains exactly what the title refers to, which I immediately regret.
From there we run through the worst heat wave in European history, arguing about flat earth with your own bass player, the Stray Cats and the clean rockabilly problem, why image decided which punk bands got big and which didn't, AI and where an artist draws the line, and the difference between a person and the role he plays on stage. Yeah, it's a lot.
