It has a name. It has a 70-year track record. And it's running your workplace right now. You've felt it. The tightening in your chest before you speak up in a meeting. The instinct to delete a comment before anyone screenshots it. The mandatory training that asks you to affirm things you don't actually believe, just to keep your job. That feeling has a name, and it didn't start on social media.

It's called a struggle session, and Mao Zedong's regime perfected it in thought-reform prisons in the early 1950s before unleashing it on the streets during the Cultural Revolution. Psychiatrist Robert Lifton documented the exact mechanism in 1961: manufactured guilt over crimes that only exist inside the accuser's worldview, used to break down a person's identity and rebuild it from scratch. It was never about truth. It was about submission.

70 years later, the delivery system changed. The mechanism didn't.

Mandatory "coaching," "sensitivity training," and re-education programs that quietly demand you adopt a belief system you don't actually hold, not because you did anything wrong, but because compliance is easier than getting flagged. Curriculum and classroom culture now train students and staff on which questions are safe to ask out loud and which have to stay private. Not through debate, through fear of the label. Word policing. Public shaming rituals. Forced confessions.

Reduce someone to a single word — racist, fascist, extremist — enough times, and you've trained an audience to withhold the basic empathy they'd extend to literally anyone else. That's not "just words." That's the exact psychological groundwork that makes ostracism, destroyed livelihoods, and even violence feel justified.

The goal was never behavior correction. It's a demonstration for everyone watching: dissent, and we will come for you. Once that lesson lands, nobody has to enforce anything anymore — people censor themselves for free.

In his testimony, Palmer lays out specific examples: CBC's coverage of the virus origin, a children's segment on vaccine safety, on-air "experts" he says had undisclosed ties to federally funded vaccine uptake groups, and a regional story on vaccine injuries he says was delayed and blocked, a decision that reportedly prompted the reporter covering it to retire.
